Hi Alice
My husband and I start singing CO seriously since 1999 after
particpating in weekend CO class organised by our employer
in HK. We were also members of a small 曲藝社 with 8-10
members. The main activity was to practice regularly (once a week) with the musical band (usually composed of 5-6
freelance musicians - hired only when needed). We also
performed publicly once per year. The admission to the
concert was free by ticket.

After we went back to Melbourne Australia, we jointed
various local 曲藝社 to continue practcing CO and entertain
ourself. There are about 6 CO 曲藝社 in Melbourne and
most of them have their own musical band and amateur
singers as members. They also perform regularly (one to
two times per year). The number of audiences are only
about a few hundreds - mainly Chinese. The ticket price is
about A20=HK110. We moved to Darwin in 2002 which is a small state capital city with a small Chinese population
(about 2000). There was no CO 曲藝社 and My husband
and I had to set up one and start practicing weekly with some novices. Nevertheless, we manage to perform publicly
and regularly (average one in every 8 months). The concert
is free and the audiences are from all walks of life -
Cantonese/English speaking Chinese as well as main stream
Australians. Funding is always a problem and mainly relies
on our members' generous donations and sometimes some
public funding.
The age of the 曲藝社 members that we have come across
ranges from 40s to 70s & early 80s. Most of them are,
however, in the age of 40-50s.
