Well, louis and I used to believe that ngai wai ying is one of the best after Home Sin Lui and before your favourite Chiang ManTuen. Louis particularly like her FarYuetYing. What a shame that she didn't perform well in this show. Maybe it was due to jet lag, ha ha?
PS Are you coming to our show in August? It is the best time to visit Darwin and you could see a lot of variety shows in the Darwin Festival which partly sponsors our program. |

may be due to jet lag, foreign place etc. I know many things can go wrong with a show like this. Anyway as far as Far Yuet Ying is concern it is a new trend, a bit toward pop style. Her singing style suits that well. As for traditional opera I think she sings with too much tremolo and not solid or steady enough in the 'meat' of her voice.
Kwok FUng Nui, So Chun Mui have solid quality. They are also Hung Sin Nui's pupils.
I will keep Darwin in mind la. |

Everyone who bought ticket for the 2 days get a free 3-vcd set of Ngai Wai Ying's encouragable attempt at modernization of our opera. (like 'far yuet ying')
I just finished watching it. Her effort has a long way to go and unfortunately she may be a bit too mature for this endeavour. |

Any effort to try improving the CO is a good thing. But I think this kind of endevour needs a lot of endurance and financial support. Modernization would have been a long way to go - Hongkies (I guess this is the most influencial if not the biggest group of CO lovers) are not used to the mainland culture. Without the support from this group, I do not think any Chinese CO troupes can afford the risk to invest in this kind of business. Unfortunately, there is too few goodies like"FaYuetYing". (Could some one in HK tell me how many people went to watch this modernised CO when it was staging in HK last year? Thank you). |

i agree with you. I think it also needs new faces to do it. Anyone old known performers would be rejected easily.
To me the fusion of the score, mixing the traditional opera music, e.g. the 2 wongs with western type of harmany, the mixing of traditional chinese and western instruments etc needs a lot of work. I found a fair bit of clashing of the cultures in many many of the songs.
The playing of modern ballet and opera together is interesting but again I feel uneasy about it.
I will try to get copies for you. and I apologize for the poor mobile reception. |
