The Ventures' Story

The Ventures, originally the Versatones, were formed by Bob Bogle in 1959, in Seattle, Washington.
Bob was born in Oklahoma but grew up in Portland Oregon. Bogle had started playing guitar by his teens. In his mid-teens Bogle moved to Seattle to work where he supported himself by bringing wet cement to bricklayers. There he met Don Wilson, who had learned trombone and piano as a child, and bass and guitar while in the army. By mid-1959 they had begun playing in local clubs. They soon added Nokie Edwards, who they had met while doing a local TV show in Tacoma. Eventually they completed the group with Howie Johnson on the drums.
Their first demo "Walk Don't Run" was sent to various record companies. Receiving no response, Wilson's mother released it on her own Blue Horizon label. "Walk Don't Run"was picked up for distribution by Dolton Records (distributed by Liberty), the group re-named, and became an instant regional hit in 1960. In August 1960 "Walk Don't Run" became a #2 hit. The Ventures followed it with a rock version of "Ghost Riders in the Sky, then "Perfidia, "Lullaby of the Leaves," "Diamond Head," and 2,000 Pound Bee," all which were hits through the early and mid-Sixties.
In the wake of the success of Walk Don't Run, Wilson and Bogel left their jobs in the building
industry to pursue music full time. The group issued a cover of Perfidia, a Latin song that had been made popular by Alberto Dominguez in 1939. Perfidia reached #15.
In 1961 Johnson was replaced by Mel Taylor after he was hurt in an automobile accident and left the group. Hits kept coming with versions of "The Lonely Bull" and "I Walk the Line" in 1963 and a top ten surf remake of "Walk Don't Run" in 1964. In 1965 they released what was one of the first instructional records, Play Guitar with the Ventures.
In 1967 Edwards was replaced by Jerry McGee, who left in 1970 to record with Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett, after which Edwards returned. By that time keyboardist Johnny Durrill had expanded the Ventures to a quintet and the group had delved into fuzz-tone and wah-wah guitar modification as well blues, calypso, and Latin material.
Throughout the 60's and 70's there were several personnel changes. Nokie Edwards left and was replaced by Jerry McGee. Edwards later returned to the Ventures, and left again. Keyboard player John Durrill joined the group in the late 60's. Mel Taylor left at one point and formed his own group, Mel Taylor and the Dynamics, but later returned to the group. Some of the artists who worked as guests or session players with the Ventures in the 60's included Leon Russell, Harvey Mandel, and David Gates.
In 1969 the Ventures had a hit with a version of the theme from the TV show Hawaii Five-O. In 1981, with Bogle, Wilson, Edwards, and Taylor, they released a regional West Coast single "Surfin' and Spyin,'" and embarked on a successful tour of the U.S. and Japan. Bogle, Wilson, and McGee are still active in the group. Mel Taylor passed away in August, 1996.

Raymond,
When was the above picture taken of the Ventures? Bob and Don surely look different now from the day they came to HK and gave a performance with Bobby Rydell in the mid sixties. I attended their show; it was great! Thanks for the pic and the story!

今天介紹一下一位六十年代非常出色的黑人女歌手 (好!) (好!) (好!)

Dionne Warwick

Soulful vocalist Dionne Warwick was born Marie Dionne Warrick (with no "w") in East Orange, New Jersey on December 12, 1940 and grew up in a family that loved gospel music. She first sang in Newark's New Hope Baptist Church choir. She played piano with the Drinkard Singers, a gospel group her mother managed, and studied at Connecticut's Hart School of Music. During the same period, she also formed 'the Gospelaires' with her sister, Dee Dee and aunt Cissy Houston. Increasingly employed as backing singers, the trio's voices soon appeared on records by the Drifters and Garnet Mimms.
In 1962, composer Burt Bacharach, who had written some songs for the Drifters, heard Warrick and invited her to cut a version of his song "Don't Make Me Over," co-written and produced with Hal David. It became a Top 40 hit, launching her career as Dionne Warwick, because her name was misspelled on her recording contract!
Bacharach's compositions were the perfect setting for Warwick's light, yet powerful voice and this first taste of success set the wheels in motion for a long string of collaborations during the 1960's. The pair's early success' included "Anyone Who Had A Heart", "Walk On By", "You'll Never Get To Heaven (If You Break My Heart)", "Message to Michael", "Alfie", "The Valley of the Dolls", and "This Girl's in Love with You".
Although many of her singles charted, few were Top 10 hits, and the soulful edge, prevalent for the first two years, was gradually worn away. As her songwriters moved ever closer to the mainstream, she also embraced a safer, albeit classier approach, with such hits as the uplifting "I Say A Little Prayer" (1967) and "Do You Know The Way To San Jose?" (1968).
In 1971, Warwick abandoned both her label and mentors and signed with Warner Brothers Records. The result was some disappointing releases and the relationship soon floundered. Her biggest hit came in a duet with the Spinners called "Then Came You", in 1974.
Dionne moved to Arista Records in 1979, where production work by Barry Manilow rekindled her commercial standing, with "I'll Never Love This Way Again" and "Deja Vu". Over the next two decades Warwick continued to score solo hits, including the Barry Gibb written, "Heartbreaker", all the while remaining in demand as a guest artist. She appeared on the hit singles "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late" and "Friends In Love" with Johnny Mathis, on "Love Power" with Jeffrey Osborne, "How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye?" with Luther Vandross and on the Grammy-winning hit "That's What Friends Are For" with Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight and Elton John.
Along the way, she racked up five Grammys and five gold albums, despite devoting increasing amounts of time to non-musical endeavours like the Dionne Warwick Design Group (an interior design firm), the nationally syndicated radio show "Love Notes From Around the World," the TV show "Solid Gold" (which she hosted for three years in the early '80s), a perfume company, the Psychic Friends Network (a 1-900 business), and, most importantly, major charity work for AIDS-related causes (she has raised millions of dollars through benefit concerts and fundraising efforts).
In the 90s, Dionne recorded two albums for Arista, 1993's "Friends Can Be Lovers", which features cameos by Sting and her cousin Whitney Houston, and 1995's Latin-themed "Aquarela Do Brazil". Both sold well and received positive reviews, indicating that after more than 30 years in the recording business, Warwick is as creative and popular as ever.
